Oh man, Angel Sanctuary. It was never my favorite Yuki Kaori work (that’s Shounen zanzou and Earl Cain, that incredibly hot mess that I don’t think ever got the attention and respect it absolutely deserved), but I remember it having read it – although I can hardly remember anything about the story, only that it sort of collapsed on itself at the end like those overly ambitious melodramas do, that particular “that stopped making sense two volumes ago, and I don’t think I fully understand yet what’s going on and how it’s even relevant, but damn it if it’s not really dramatic.” I don’t think I’ll read it again, but I’m looking forward to this new part.

However, I’m wondering why there’s a sequel/spinoff right now. (And why not Cain?! All Cain got was a few pages of the epilogue long ago that provided a full conclusion, not a mass.)

Estimated Time Of Arrival:

…Well, Godchild and Count Cain are two separate series released years apart, with one being a direct sequel to the other. But the two together are called The Cain Saga, and it’s a bit odd that the ANN encyclopedia entry doesn’t seem to reflect that. If I remember correctly, the original Count Cain series was called that, and then the label “The Cain Saga” was added to include Godchild after its debut. The Cain Saga should only be treated as a franchise site linking the other two related series like Gundam or whatever. To add to the confusion, Kaine is a completely independent work and has never been published in English.

Anyway! I’m really looking forward to this new release. Angel Sanctuary is a series that I used to really enjoy and it gives me a reason to pluck it off my shelves and read it again. I’ve always lamented the lack of a true anime adaptation for this (3 episode OVA for 20 books pffft), so one might happen if there is enough interest in this new series.

A new Sanctuary of Angels?! Count me in!

I still have all the volumes of the original series, which is as insanely twisted as it is oddly beautiful (not to mention creative/imaginative in ways you wouldn’t believe). Maybe it will be re-released should this new series be licensed? It’s an outspoken classic that deserves to be read and remembered. In any case, I’m really looking forward to Kaori Yuki’s sequel!

I don’t know about current editions, but as far as US releases go, Viz released the first four Count Cain (UK has no censuses) Stories in five volumes as The Cain Saga and godchild as its own title. (They also started publishing godchild before the earlier books.) I don’t see “saga” branding on Japanese releases, it seems The Cain Saga is just the title viz used for everything before godchild.

I am looking forward to more Sanctuary of Angelsalthough I can’t imagine what more bizarre revelations could top the existing ending.

Yes that’s right. The saga thing was advertised in Shojo Beat magazine back then as the continued adventures of Cain or something. They hired Godchild in the magazine and started producing promos for the other as a prequel around this time. You’re right that it was a definite Viz thing, but it was advertised like it was a franchise. Probably just in preparation in case Godchild gets a sequel too.
